Alessandro Stradella was a composer active in Italy in the late 17th century. He left his mark on music history as the originator of the "concerto concerto" style and as a playboy who had many affairs. At a time when opera was not very popular, Stradella produced a great number of works in the genre of solo cantatas, including the oratorio "St. John the Baptist" without acting, and the "Serenata," a kind of secular cantata, making him one of the greatest cantata composers before Handel and J.S. Bach. He was one of the greatest cantata composers before Handel and J.S. Bach. Many of his works are about the pains of love, and are beautifully crafted with technical singing and instrumental interplay. Estevan Velardi, a scholar of Italian Baroque works, personally revised Stradella's works and prepared a comparative edition. In this performance, he leads the Alessandro Stradella Consort, an ensemble named after the composer, to convey the work's appeal.Includes 76 pages of commentary (Italian and English only) Naxos Japan
