The stage production by Hungarian-born director Earl Pád Schilling is a daring rereading of the "swan knight's tale of salvation" that strips away the work's mythic surface and extracts from it questions of human responsibility and trust, and individual and collective conflict (even Elsa's death at the end of the act, a traitor by a fellow countryman execution of a traitor by his own people!) The director's intention is to create a new reading of the play. The conductor and orchestra respond to the director's intentions, and the highly acclaimed choir of the theater, with its excellent singers, bring this controversial work to life in a full and passionate performance.
