Hindemith composed a series of "chamber music" in the 1920s. Although the names of these pieces may be unfamiliar, Nos. 2 through 7 were actually written as "concertos with solo instruments," with the exception of No. 1, which was written in the form of an "ensemble concerto. Following the critically acclaimed first album (ODE-1341), this album contains Nos. 4 through 7. The violin, viola, viola d'amore, and organ are each featured as solo instruments, and each is performed with great enthusiasm by young players. The viola and viola d'amore in Nos. 5 and 6 were written for Hindemith's own performance, and while they require a high level of technique, the beautiful melodies in these works make them very enjoyable to listen to. The members of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra also provide a superb ensemble performance. Eschenbach is well known for his performances of Hindemith's works, and his album (ODE-1214), which includes the "Violin Concerto" with Midori Goto as soloist, won a Grammy Award and became a hot topic.
