The news of Skoda's death came suddenly in October 2019, just as he was about to visit Japan; although there were concerns about his health, as he was over 90 years old, he was very eager to come to Japan, and preparations for his concert in Japan were steadily underway. Unfortunately, the concert in Japan was cancelled, but here is the surviving video of Beethoven's late three piano sonatas recorded on October 15, 2017. The concert, held at the Musikvereinsaal, Vienna, was in honor of Paul Badura-Skoda's 90th birthday. His beloved Beethoven's last three piano sonatas and the preceding "Six Bagatelles" are supported by brilliant interpretations and warm tones in the Viennese tradition, different from the pianists of later generations. The audience that filled the hall went wild for the tasteful performance and congratulated Skoda with stormy applause and bouquets of flowers after the performance. Paul Badura-Skoda was born in Vienna in 1927. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory and won the Austrian Music Competition in 1947. He then began his career as a pianist under the tutelage of Etvin Fischer.A friend of composer Frank Martin, he is known for his work with Furtwängler, Karajan, and David Oistrakh. He is also a musicologist of great insight, and his accomplishments include the revision of Schubert's sonatas and Mozart's piano concertos. Naxos Japan
