Description:
Wagner's first heart, a first draft version different from the "Dutchman" we are accustomed to hearing, with Minkowski's full tact! Wagner himself wrote the libretto for "The Wandering Dutchman" based on the legend of the Dutchman's ghost ship, which wanders between the world and purgatory under the punishment of God, written by the German poet Heinrich Heine. The version usually performed is the one revised by Wagner himself in 1880, and its main motif is Wagner's ideal of "salvation through pure love". This film is the first draft of the version that Wagner composed in 1841 for a performance in Paris. The motif differs from the revised version in that the final "salvation" is left ambiguous. Olivier Pie, a theater director with a background as an actor himself, has created a unique stage performance with the silent Satan as a rabble-rouser, incorporating the anguish of Wagner's youth in Paris. Minkowski leads the hand-picked musicians of the Musique du Palais de Grenoble-Louvre to bring out the harsh sound of Wagner's first love in his Parisian days, and the veteran singer Samuel Yoon, Ingela Brinberg, a leading soprano in Northern Europe, and other great singers add a grand flourish to the production.
