Description:
Joseph Martin Krauss was born in Miltenburg, Germany. He studied music, law, and philosophy at universities in Germany, including Mannheim, and was active as a composer, playwright, and painter. 1781, his talent was recognized by the court composer to Gustav III of Stockholm, who sent him on a four-year journey to Italy to study. Krauss was exposed to the most advanced music of the time and was greatly influenced by it, including the style of opera seria in his own dramatic music, and his acquaintance with Haydn and Mozart brought new color to his works. After returning to Stockholm, he composed plays and operas for the court, and his light and elegant style earned him the nickname "Swedish Mozart. Most of his 12 symphonies are written in three-movement form, and many of them are characterized by the use of minor keys, which was unusual at the time. His dramas and cantatas are dramatic, with brilliant Italianate arias used at key points. The enjoyment of the music is different from that of Mozart's works. This box contains mainly performances of Concerto Cologne and L'Arte del Mondo, both of which were masterpieces that played a role in Krauss' revival at the time of their release.
