Description:
This is a collection of violin concertos by two of Sibelius' next generation of composers, Englund and Krami. Both of these works are considered to be two of the most famous concertos of 20th century Finland, and Krami's work, composed during World War II, was premiered in Stockholm in 1944. Although his works have been noted to have been influenced by French music - Ravel and the Six, Krami's own style is established in this concerto, and this version, revised in his later years, is even more symphonic in the accompaniment. Englund, who will celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2016, was one of the most important Finnish composers of the second half of the 20th century. For a while after the Great War, his style was more in tune with Shostakovich and Prokofiev, but in his later years he began to favor a more lyrical style, including this concerto. The first performance was a success, but the concerto has not been performed very often since then. These two works are performed by the virtuoso Benjamin Schmidt, who is highly acclaimed for his series of recordings on the OEHMS label and for his recordings of Ligeti, Shostakovich, and Reger works on the ONDINE label.
