This is a record of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's earliest television broadcast series. Steinberg was music director for three years, from 1969 to 1972, but this performance is from an earlier period when he had a brilliant relationship with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This Bruckner (1824-1896) conducted by Steinberg was broadcast as part of a live recording to great acclaim. We have succeeded in meticulously restoring that precious footage and presenting it here. They must have gradually built up this close relationship that resulted in the shimmering live performance of the same song recorded in February 1972 (on a BSO self-released disc). All of this is being released on DVD for the first time. Note that the version used here is a special version based on Schalk's version, which Steinberg further shortened for "television broadcast.It is charming that the adagio movement and finale are cut off as much as possible to fit the broadcast time. The aforementioned 1972 version was also slightly cut (the Novak version was used here), but it seems that at that time, the emphasis was placed on how much the music should be heard rather than on the composer's intentions, and such alterations were often made.
