Description:

This is a truly precious recording that allows you to fully savor the orchestra’s exquisite sound. —Naoya Hirabayashi Stereo recording of Jochum’s 1968 Japan tour! With tempos reminiscent of Furtwängler, Jochum’s interpretation is unmatched in its beautiful flow and noble brilliance. The orchestra’s rich timbre is also irresistibly captivating! ALTUS has released a CD featuring the stereo recording of Jochum’s 1968 Japan tour, originally recorded by NHK, with the latest remastering. This tour—during which he shared the podium at the Concertgebouw with Haitink—is a legendary performance that remains the talk of the town among fans. From the very opening of *Egmont*, drawn out endlessly, you’ll be captivated by a sound that is dark and profound yet beautifully resonant. I am in awe of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s magnificent sound—the airy texture of the strings, the gentle singing of the woodwinds, the taut brilliance of the brass, and a timbre that never loses its freshness. The depth of expression in the “Pastoral,” played with care and precision at a leisurely tempo, is also exceptional. I am deeply moved by the noble, refreshing clarity of the scene where the storm passes and the sky clears. *Fate* is similarly performed with a bright timbre and brimming vitality; the resounding themes and the brilliance of the fanfares in the second movement are unique charms of this performance. Furthermore, the intense brilliance of the final movement is unparalleled. Of course, this is not achieved by relying on special effects; I would also like to emphasize that this is an orthodox performance that naturally controls the grand flow and masterfully brings out the full grandeur of Beethoven’s music, like a mighty river. This is a blissful live recording that envelops the listener in a sumptuous, rich sound rarely heard today. Please savor Beethoven’s great symphony to your heart’s content. It is true that this tempo may have been strongly influenced by Furtwängler. While the veracity of this claim remains unclear, it does not feel like a borrowed style at all; rather, it seems to flow directly from Jochum’s own personality. Like Furtwängler’s interpretation, the performance is absolutely magnificent. The second movement is also excellent. After all, the orchestra’s tone is simply superb. It seems the tradition of the Mengelberg era still lingered, and it’s fair to say that no orchestra today produces such an organic sound.
