Daniel Santiago, a leading figure in the Brazilian music scene, and Pedro Martins, one of the most important figures in the music industry who is now active worldwide, have teamed up to release a guitar album. Santiago says, "Playing with Pedro feels like doing something directly from the heart. We are looking for emotions and impressions. We breathe together." Santiago praises this as "the result of globalization" with regard to the many different influences they have taken on. The opening track, "Curupira Modernista," is an intricately woven guitar piece named after a South American mythological humanoid creature with orange hair and backward-facing legs whose footprints lead to a place.It is an elegant thesis for the movement as a whole, highlighting Santiago and Martins' tendency to reflect on their own cultural and musical history to inspire a surprisingly new approach to guitar playing. Corpo" ("body" in Portuguese) is named for the synchronicity of the various social, political, and animal body movements. The flamboyance of Santiago's fast, dramatic syncopated chords shift and collide seamlessly with Martins' fluid, lyrical leads. The "Maracatu" is Martins' homage to the folk rhythms of northeastern Brazil, played with a modern conception of harmony that would not have been traditionally played to these rhythms. Valentina" is a piece Santiago wrote for his daughter when he became a father, which he describes as "the greatest event in my life. The song expresses the deep love he feels for his daughter and the uncertainty of fatherhood in a warm and complex drop-tuned acoustic arpeggio.
