Description:
A magical fantasy world by master filmmaker Jacques Rivette. A time of vertigo and pleasure in cinema... A surreal fantasy of freedom by Jacques Rivette, the genius of the Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) that revolutionized cinema. Duel In this fantasy set in modern Paris, the Queen of the Sun and the Queen of the Moon face off over a magic stone that will allow them to live on earth. Inspired by the novels of Gérard de Nerval, Rivette conceived of a four-part series called "Daughters of Fire," including a love story, a crime drama, a western, and a musical comedy, of which this film is the "crime drama. This film is the "crime drama" of the four parts. It is an outlandish fairy tale with elements of a challenging film noir, achieving a poetic beauty. The two dueling women are played by Rivette regulars Juliette Bert and Burle Auger. Noroît. Morag, a female pirate, vows revenge on Julia, the leader of a band of pirates who occupy a castle on an isolated island to avenge her brother's death. Like "Duel," this film about two women in confrontation was originally intended as a western, the second film in the "Daughters of Fire" tetralogy, but Rivette's magic transforms it into a film that is timeless and genre-defying.Fiction and reality collide and a dance of death is choreographed as the story unfolds in the spectacular locations of a 12th century fortress and a reconstructed 17th century castle on the coast of Brittany. Although the tetralogy is unfinished at the end of this film, the world of Rivette's strange intoxication continues to deepen. The Merry Go Round Benjamin receives a telegram from his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth and goes to Paris, but it is her sister Leo who is there. Unlike "Duel" and "Noroît," the two rivals are now a man and a woman, and a never-ending chase unfolds on a stage dominated by mystery. Although the filming was protracted and confusing due to the personal problems of Maria Schneider, who played Leo, and Rivette herself, the themes introduced in the first feature film, "Paris is Ours," were beautifully reconstructed as a melancholic mystery involving familial revenge and paranoia. Ben is played by Joe D'Alessandro, an actor discovered by Andy Warhol. The father of Leo and Elizabeth is played by the famous actor Maurice Garrel.
