POPtical Illusion was completed just a little over a year after his previous critically acclaimed 2023 album, Mercy, which was both probing and furious, and featured a stellar cast of guests including Animal Collective, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, and Actress. However, this album is neither "Mercy II" nor a collection of dead songs.In fact, throughout a career spanning more than 60 years, Cale has never repeated himself. His zeitgeist has shifted between ecstatic classicism and free rock, between traditional compositional methods and the brazenly unsettling reworking of electronic music. And in "Poptical Illusion," he dives almost alone into a maze of synthesizers, sampling, organs, and pianos, delivering his words like a whirlwind of hope, a wise assertion that change is still possible. Produced in a Los Angeles studio by Nita Scott, Cale's longtime creative partner, Poptical Illusion is the work of someone who never ignores anger and its reasons, but is willing to face the future.
