Description:

A Dancefloor In Ndola, a pioneering new compilation curated by East African DJ Kampire. A mix of African classics and rarities from the 1970s to the 1990s, including Congo's Soukousse, South Africa's Bubblegum, and Zambia's Kalindula, it is released on 2LP and CD, with personal liner notes that trace Kampire's connection to her music, and Featuring exclusive new edits. The release marks an evolution in Strut's approach to compilations, showcasing emerging DJ talent from around the world and embracing an innovative approach to discovering music from the next wave of selectors. Having established his reputation over the past decade with an impressive set at Uganda's Nyege Nyege Festival, Kampire is currently touring the world and has been praised for his brilliantly curated sets of all African music styles from the 70s and 80s to the present day! Kampire is a Kenyan musician from Ugandan parents who grew up in Kenya. Born in Kenya to Ugandan parents, Kampire spent his formative years in Ndola, Zambia. A Dancefloor In Ndola is inspired by the artists and songs that became part of her soundtrack during that era. It's important for me to constantly reference the history of African music. When I was 17, I didn't listen to my father's music, but now I love and collect those records. Now I collect those records because I love them. I like the feeling of sharing nostalgia, of everyone knowing songs they haven't heard in a long time. It's a touchstone for me when I perform," he says. The compilation flows through a variety of East and South African genres, from Congolese rumba and soukous to the bubblegum of 1980s townships and the rich guitar sounds of Zambia's kalindura." Some of the styles on this compilation are often thought of as rustic music from the region. I and other contemporary African artists and DJs draw inspiration from such music, and Kampire also includes a wide range of music from Congolese legends such as Pembey Sheiro, Feza Shamamba, and Princesse Mansia M'bila to V-. Mash and South Africa's Di Groovy Girls, as well as spotlighting the many amazing women who have been active in the African music scene since the 1980s. Exclusive cover artwork by Canon Rumanji.
