Notes On A Journey, led by Jurgen von Knoblauch of Jazzanova, is a floating jazz samba from Minas! Vinicius Mendes is a saxophonist, flutist, composer, improviser, and researcher from the inland Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The state of Minas Gerais is known not only for its abundant mineral resources and mining activities, but also for its deep musical tradition, forged by pioneers such as Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges. Mendes earned a Bachelor's degree in Popular Music and a Master's degree in Music from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, one of the most important educational institutions in Brazil, where he continued his studies in free jazz and Brazilian popular instrumental music improvisation. In 2014, Vinicius was presented his first instrumental work at the Savasi Jazz Festival and recorded his album "NAU" a year later.The album, a mix of free jazz and traditional Brazilian music, is a sort of prelude to the album Macunaísmo Tardio, which will finally be released in full, with the first volume recorded in 2021 and the second in 2022. This album is surely one of the many masterpieces that have been reissued and brought to public attention by Jazanova's Jürgen von Knoblauch-led label, which aims to shed light on overlooked masterpieces. In addition to Mendez's own original compositions, the album features up-and-coming artists such as Lucca Noacco, who arranged Moons' "Best Kept Secret," fresh arrangements of Minas legend Toninho Horta's classic tunes, and Joyce's eternal dance floor classic "Aldeia de de la Luz. and even a stunning version of the timeless dance floor classic "Aldeia de Ogum" by Joyce.
