The Modigliani String Quartet plays Grieg & Smetana with freshness and nobility. The quartet started out as a youthful string quartet, but in its 20 years of activity, it has already gained worldwide acclaim for its performances, which retain their freshness and freshness, but with increased depth and magnificence of expression. This time, they featured Grieg and Smetana. Although the two musicians, separated by an ocean and of different nationalities, did not know each other, their quartets, written at about the same time, have in common the fact that they were written during the composer's own difficult circumstances. Grieg began work on the G minor quartet at the age of 33, after winning acclaim for his piano concerto and success with the Peer Gynt. The quartet is a large work of over 30 minutes in length.Smetana, on the other hand, although revered as the father of Czech music, was forced to leave his conducting career when he became totally deaf in his fifties and lived a life of anguish and poverty in a village in central Bohemia. The work, published on December 29, 1876, under the title "My Life," seems to reflect Smetana's many thoughts and feelings. Modigliani's musicians make these two dramatic works resonate with a sense of unity, as if the 16 strings were a single instrument, and with the heat and power of a sound that is at times almost orchestral.
