The ensemble has been nominated for the Gramophone Award three times, and their release of "Josquin des Prez: Motets and Mass Movements" (PCDA68321), released on the 500th anniversary of Josquin des Prez's death, was chosen as a special selection by Record Arts. The group is now recognized as one of the best vocal ensembles in the U.K. and has gained recognition in Japan as well. For the monks living in German-speaking religious houses that had escaped the ravages of the Reformation, music must have been a source of joy as well as a center of spiritual discipline. Many monastic orders, especially the Benedictines and Augustinians, employed polyphonic music with singing, organ playing, and even musical instruments to celebrate solemn festivals. This album depicts the life of a young man who entered a Benedictine or Augustinian monastery in the late 16th century, from his initiation into the monastery and the celebration of his first Mass, to his election as abbot, his eventual death, and his heavenly abode. Stephen Rice and the Brabant Ensemble explore examples of the repertoire the music and wine-loving monks might have heard, including the Mass "Veni in" by Orlando di Lasso (Lassus), music director of the Munich Court Chapel and the most prolific and distinguished composer of his generation, "Veni in hortum meum" and two motets, as well as motets by Clemens Non Papa, Cipriano De Lore, and several other unknown composers and monks. *Recorded July 20-22, 2023, Westminster Chapel, Oxford Brookes University, Harcourt Hill Campus, England.
