This extremely ambitious program couples Dvorak's masterpiece, which is probably one of the 18th repertoire of the Takács String Quartet, with the recently discovered piano quintet by Florence Price. Florence Price, born in 1887, is considered the first black female composer in the United States and has been attracting attention along with the recent revival of female musicians. Having suffered the dual handicaps of "gender and race," many of Price's works were unpublished at the time of her death, and a considerable amount of her manuscripts had also been lost. The Piano Quintet in A major recorded in this work was discovered in the attic of an abandoned house in Illinois in 2009, along with two lost symphonies.Amlan and the Takács Quartet at their best convey that Price's Piano Quintet, finally beginning to see the light of day some 70 years after its composition and more than 50 years after his death, will be as familiar and beloved as Dvořák's masterpiece. *Recorded May 21-25, 2024, Wyaston Concert Hall, Monmouth.
