Description:

The latest work of this inspiring and stimulating duo, full of inspiration that fascinated the one and only oboe player himself. Swiss composer and one-of-a-kind oboe player Heinz Holliger and his musical partner Marie-Lise Spubach have recorded the album "con slancio" for the ECM New Series. The first track, "con slancio," which is also the album title, was written by Holliger as a tribute to Spubach. Since I started playing duo with Marie-Lise, I have been fascinated by the way our two instruments expand each other's range and tonal palette. It has opened up new avenues of sound for me," Holger said. The album features the first recordings of six of Holger's own works written between 2018 and 2020, as well as very contrasting works that have been dedicated to Holger by fellow composers over the years. The earliest are Jürg Wittenbach's Sonata (1961) and Jacques Wiltberger's Rondeau (1962); the most recent, both written to celebrate Holliger's 80th birthday in 2019, are Gerge Kurtág's proverbial "con slancio, largamente" and Toshio Hosokawa's thought-provoking "Knot." The British music magazine Gramophone described Holliger's album "Zwiegesprache" as "simply astonishing in these highly fluent performances by Heinz Holliger and Marie-Lise Spubach," and these words apply directly to this album. Here, too, we hear inspired, energetic, and stimulating playing. Recorded at the DRS studios in Zurich, this album continues the record of Holliger's music begun 40 years ago with the 1986 recording of "Mehrklange" for oboe solo and other instrumental configurations. It includes many important works, such as the "Scardanelli Zycles," the violin concerto "In Praise of Louis Stae," and the operas "Snow White" and "Renea."The booklet includes a wide-ranging interview with Heinz Holliger by Michael Kunkel (in German and English).
