The Complete Clementi Sonatas for modern piano, start! Composer Muzio Clementi (January 23, 1752 - March 10, 1832) was a Roman-born pianist, pedagogue, conductor, music publisher, editor, and piano maker. Influenced by the harpsichord school of Domenico Scarlatti and the classical school of Haydn, he developed a fluid and technical legato playing style that he passed on to a generation of pianists including John Field, Moscheles, Meierbeer, Hummel, and Czerny. In addition, he had a marked influence on Beethoven and Chopin. Clementi, a composer as the field of piano sonatas, is also known as the "Father of the Piano. Of his playing, Moscheles wrote, "It is characterized by the most beautiful legato, lively passages and supple touch, and a technique that never fails." It is said that Domenico Scarlatti stopped playing on the old type of piano because he established a new school of piano technique. Clementi composed nearly 110 piano sonatas.After the success of his "Sonatinas, Op. 36," some of his early, relatively easy pieces were later classified as "sonatinas." His works have also been parodied as "Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum" by Debussy and "Bureaucratic Sonatinas" by Satie. Most of these sonatas, however, are more difficult to play than Mozart's sonatas, and Mozart wrote in a letter to his sisters, "I wish I did not have to play Clementi's sonatas because of the quick note leaps and widely used chord progressions. It ruins the natural brightness of her hands," she even wrote. Despite the many honors bestowed on Clementi at the time, the works have not been played much in later periods and even today, except for some works for practice, and some works discovered by Horowitz.
