Description:

Pearlman protégé Randall Goosby makes his DECCA debut! Born to an African-American father and a Korean mother who grew up in Japan, Randall Goosby began playing the violin at age 7 and made his concerto debut with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra at age 9. At age 13, he performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra, where he was praised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for his "astonishing musical maturity" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Later, under the guidance of Itzhak Perlman, he studied at the Juilliard School, where he received an Artist Diploma. He continues to study with Perlman and Catherine Cho. For the album Roots, Randall traces his roots, drawing on music by African American composers and works influenced by their culture. The album is a tribute to Randall and the pioneers who paved the way for artists of his generation. The latest work written for Randall by his close friend and young black composer Xavier Dubois Foley is about Shelter Island, where they traveled together. Coleridge-Taylor Parkinson (1932-2004) composed Blue/s Forms for Sanford Allen, the first black violinist to become a member of the New York Philharmonic. Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" is a beautiful violin arrangement by Heifetz. William Grant Still (1895-1978) was the first African American composer to perform his own opera. Florence Price (1887-1953) was the first black female symphony composer in the U.S. The recorded music is based on a score discovered late in the century after her death. This is the world premiere recording. Maud Powell (1867-1920) was the first American violinist to receive international recognition, known for her advocacy of the music of women and black composers. She arranged Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Deep River.Dvorak's Sonatina was composed while he was in New York and features themes from Native American melodies and Negro spirituals Produced by Grammy Award-winning David Frost in 2021, the piece was written by Dvorak and performed by Randall Randall. Randall began playing the violin at age 7, made his concert debut at age 9, and won the Junior Division of the Sphinx Competition at the youngest age of 13. He studied with Itzhak Perlman, one of the world's leading violinists. Universal Music/IMS
