Description:
[A World of Fantasy Presented by Dumousso, a Leading Authority on Modern French Orchestral Interpretation] An album that traces the lineage of “the fantastic (le fantastique)” in French symphonic music from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. In France at that time, influenced by literature, themes of horror and the supernatural—such as ghosts, demons, spirits, and witches—flourished, replacing the magical elements found in traditional opera. This album features works that condense an eerie atmosphere and dramatic developments through unique orchestration, including Gounod’s Overture to *The Blood-Stained Nun*, Guiraud’s “Fantastic Hunt,” Caro’s “March of the Chimera,” and Schmidt’s “Haunted House.” In collaboration with the French Romantic Music Center (Palazzetto BruZane), this recording places special emphasis on the works of female composers who have been overlooked by history, featuring the Prelude from Augusta Olmes’ *Hero and Leander* and the Prelude from Marie Jaël’s *Océane* (believed to be the edition by Sébastien Trestel for the opening of Part 1) as world premiere recordings in this edition. Each piece is truly a delight to listen to, and while it is a great pity that they were nearly forgotten, swept away by the tides of history, the significance of their inclusion here is immense. Conducted by Pierre Dumousso, who is highly popular during his tours in Japan, and performed by the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine with precision and a deep understanding of the works’ essence, this recording creates a sound full of tension while highlighting the distinctive, richly colored orchestration, masterfully reviving this unsettling beauty for the modern era. *Japanese liner notes for the domestic edition… Mitsuya Nakanishi Naxos Japan
