Paul Ignatz Lichtenauer was a composer contemporary with Bach and Handel. He was renowned primarily for his work as organist and music director at Osnabrück Cathedral. He left six masses, Op. 2, printed in Augsburg in 1741, which were used in church services in southern Germany and other Catholic areas because of their relative ease of performance.The names of the masses are given in the index of the collection. B.V.M. stands for Beatae Virginis Maria, and these masses are associated with the feast of the Virgin Mary. Also, "S. Antonii" in Mass No. 5 refers not to Antonius of Padua, but to "St. Antonius the Abbot," who is considered the founder of the monastic system. All are characterized by a festive and rich tone, with a touch of Italian influence and the grandeur of the late Baroque style. The solo parts, in which important words are sung in counterpoint, are highlighted by the use of coloratura, making the music a delight to listen to. (Naxos Japan)
