Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Caruso, Italy's "King of Bel Canto"! To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso in 2023, NAXOS Historical reissue of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1903, Caruso quickly became a national star with a booming popularity. Caruso's career began in 1903 with his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Around the same time, he began recording for Victor Records in the United States. His records were big hits and contributed to the growth of the record industry in its infancy. In Japan, his records were released on the "Red Disc," a reference to the RCA Red Seal, and became very popular. The songs in this set range from opera arias to songs, Neapolitan folk songs, pop songs, and his own compositions, and some of them include alternate takes. Some of them are accompanied by famous composers playing the piano themselves, and some of them are rarely heard today. The reissue was overseen by Ward Marston, the head of Marston Records.Marston, born in 1952, is internationally acclaimed for his reissues of historical sound sources, and his projects, mainly RCA recordings, have won international awards including Grammy, Gramophone, and ICMA. Caruso's era was acoustic recording/mechanical blowing before the practical use of electric recording, and although there are limitations in terms of physical sound quality and amount of information, the unedited singing by so-called "one-shot recording" conveys Caruso's voice and singing style realistically after more than 100 years.
