As of 2018, Brian Thornton is a cellist with the Cleveland Orchestra as well as a conductor. He has a strong interest in contemporary music, favoring works by John Adams and others, but this album features two cello sonatas by Brahms that are deeply emotional. Accompaniment is provided by Spencer Meyer, who was highly acclaimed on Bolcom's rag album (STNS 30041). The lyrical performance is completely different from the humorous Bolcom's. Naxos Japan
