Leonardo Leo (1694-1744), after attracting attention as an opera composer, succeeded Alessandro Scarlatti as the first organist at the Neapolitan court in 1725, and became a leading composer of the Neapolitan school in many fields, including opera, religious music, and instrumental music. Under the influence of Scarlatti, his works are different from those of Corelli and Albinoni, who were also Italian Baroque composers, in that they are plain and well-rounded, without glittering ornamentation, and have a sense of dignity that is connected to the Classical School. Soprano Ulrike Hofbauer, who studied with Antony Lurie, has been soloist in performances by Parrott, Herreweghe, Pulher, Marcon, Leonhardt, and others, and teaches at the Institute for Old Music at the Mozarteum Salzburg, sings this Leo work. The dialogue is dramatic and colorful, and the clear contrasts typical of Italian music are vividly heard in both sound and expression.
