This is the third release by Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Ansnes, born in 1970, under his exclusive contract with Sony Classical. This is the third and final installment of Ansnes’s three-year project—spanning 2012 to 2014—to perform and record Beethoven’s complete piano concertos. His partner is the up-and-coming Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO), and Ansnes both performs on piano and conducts. Titled “Beethoven—A Journey,” this project marks Ansnes’s first recording of Beethoven’s works. Even in Ansnes’s vast discography—which began with Virgin Classics and was continued and expanded by EMI Classics (now Warner Classics)—Beethoven’s works had never been included until now. Ansnes, now in his mid-40s and at the peak of his career, is tackling his first-ever recording of works by the great composer Beethoven. His previously released recordings of “Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3” and “Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 4” have already been highly acclaimed for his mature pianism and profound musical insight. Now, at long last, he turns to the Fifth Piano Concerto, “Emperor”—the most popular of Beethoven’s five piano concertos. The accompanying “Choral Fantasy” begins with improvisational passages on the piano and culminates in a mixed chorus, four soloists, and an orchestra triumphantly celebrating art, building to an overwhelming climax. With a structure similar to the fourth movement of the “Ninth,” this work demands even greater skill from the conductor than a concerto does, and it will be fascinating to see how Ansnes masters it.
