Released in December 1959 on New Jazz, an affiliate of Prestige Records, the young Cats, who were on the rise at the time, including Coltrane and Burrell, gathered around Flanagan. John Coltrane was living in Detroit in the mid-1950s when he met pianist Tommy Flanagan. Fellow locals drummer Lewis Hayes, bassist Doug Watkins, and guitarist Kenny Burrell join the two for this energetic session, along with trumpeter Idrees Sleeman! Although Tommy Flanagan had become one of the most highly regarded jazz pianists, his appearances during this period were primarily as a sideman, and although he was highly regarded by his fellow musicians, he was not recognized by a larger audience as having demonstrated superior ability. This album, featuring almost all of Flanagan's compositions, allowed the pianist to shine.
