Peter Gabriel’s performance at the first “WOMAD (World of Music, Arts, and Dance)” (1982)—a world music festival he organized himself—is now available for the first time! It all began with a simple idea—to create a festival that would bring together the wonderful music and art being created around the world: works produced outside the mainstream, not played on the radio, and rarely found in record stores. Thus, the first WOMAD festival was held from Friday, July 16, to Sunday, July 18, 1982, at the 240-acre Bath and West Showground in Somerset, England. The philosophy behind it was “not to simply sprinkle world music throughout a rock festival, but to prove that these wonderful artists could be headliners in their own right.” During the three-day event, the “Evening Concert Series” took place at the Showering Pavilion on the grounds. The Friday night concert featured the Chinese dance and music troupe Tianjin, Simple Minds, and Peter Gabriel, who performed a “special festival set of unreleased songs.” Live at WOMAD 1982 captures that Friday night performance. The unreleased songs performed here were seven of the eight tracks—excluding “Wallflower”—that would later appear on the album Peter Gabriel 4, which was released two months later. On stage, Peter performed with the following musicians: David Rose (guitar), John Giblin (bass), Larry Fast (synthesizer), Jerry Marotta (drums), Peter Hammill (vocals), and Ekome (drums/percussion), “a wonderful Bristol drum and dance group.” Peter Gabriel’s Live at WOMAD 1982 not only captures the birth of a festival that has since been held more than 160 times in 27 countries, but also documents the debut performances of songs such as “The Rhythm of the Heat,” “San Jacinto,” and “Shock the Monkey”—songs that would later become Gabriel’s signature tracks. ● Double-page paper sleeve
