Rostropovich is still great! Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007), a young man of many talents including conducting, was a truly great cellist. This CD collects his youthful and sharp virtuosity from his Soviet days, from his 20s to his mid-30s. Rostropovich appeared like a comet at the time and became a huge star not only for his superb technique but also for his deep and profound musicality. He was closely associated with the composers of his time, and many works were created around the world to be played by him. Among the works in this box, the cello sonatas by Prokofiev and Kabalevsky and the cello concerto by Shostakovich were written for him. The former two are rare recordings of their world premieres, and the Prokofiev work was performed by Richter, while the Kabalevsky work was performed by the composer himself at the piano. Shostakovich's Cello Sonata was not written for Rostropovich, but here Shostakovich himself provides a wonderful accompaniment.Three concerto works will be performed under the direction of Stolyarov with only Rozhestvensky and Saint-Saens.
