Miki Aoki, Based in Switzerland and Active Throughout Europe: A Carefully Curated Collection of Kodály Works Perhaps because Kodály was not a virtuoso pianist like his friends Bartók and Dohnányi, none of his piano works became widely popular, and there are few recordings of them. However, he displayed a unique compositional style distinct from both of them, and his works can certainly be considered a valuable part of the piano repertoire. The “Maros-Szek Dances” and “Galanta Dances”—known primarily as orchestral works—are presented here in their original piano versions, not as arrangements. Their clean sound, distinct from the orchestral versions, feels refreshing. Another characteristic of this collection is the abundance of approachable and enjoyable pieces, such as the elegant early “Little Waltz,” the “Nine Piano Pieces” (which show interesting influences from Debussy), and the “Meditation on a Theme by Debussy.” Furthermore, since most of these pieces do not require the level of technical skill found in works by Bartók or Dohnányi, they are ideal for use as teaching materials. Miki Aoki was born in Tokyo. She moved to England at the age of nine and subsequently studied at Indiana University, Yale University Graduate School, and the Hamburg University of Music and Drama under Géza Szebec, Boris Berman, and Koroliov. Starting with the Ibra International Competition in Italy in 2004, she has won first prize and placed in various competitions. Based in Switzerland, she is a talented artist active on the international stage. Her Hungarian flair, inherited from Szebec, is a highlight of her performances.
