Description:
This is a complete recording of Bach’s (1685–1750) *The Well-Tempered Clavier* by Schornheim, a world-renowned harpsichordist and instrument scholar, who is scheduled to visit Japan in February 2012. The harpsichord used in this recording is an instrument made by Ruckels (a famous 17th-century Antwerp harpsichord maker, of which very few examples survive today) and is part of the collection at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, Alsace. Schornheim remarks: “It is the most beautiful instrument I know, with a captivating tone. It’s unassuming in appearance and down-to-earth. It is a warm, singing instrument. It possesses all the elements essential to Bach’s contrapuntal music.” He seems to be thoroughly enamored with this instrument. This performance, using an instrument that has been in use since Bach’s time, is, of course, the result of careful consideration, and its high level of artistic and scholarly excellence truly shines through.
