The rich resonance of the chorus and the gentle, beautiful timbre that particularly highlights the beauty of the arias are striking. The scholarly yet accessible approach vividly brings to light the common ground this work shares with us today, allowing us to truly appreciate why it continues to touch people’s hearts even after three centuries. The instrumental beauty of the lute and viola da gamba in the bass arioso “Betrachte, meine Seele” (Behold, my soul), following the scene where Pilate forces the crowd to choose between Jesus and Barabbas, is exceptional. Because the performance takes place in a church with excellent acoustics, the timbres of each instrument in the small instrumental ensemble accompanying the arias resonate with striking beauty, and the crowd’s chorus is also highly effective. The beautiful harmonies of the final chorale are filled with a light of salvation that only Savall can radiate. The Evangelist, Jan Petryka, is a tenor born into a musical family in Warsaw. While focusing on Baroque music, he also collaborates with contemporary composers. He previously served as the Evangelist on Savall’s tour of the St. John Passion. In January 2026, Jordi Savall was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize—often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of music”—in recognition of his wide-ranging achievements. He is the first Catalan to receive this honor and only the second figure in the early music world to do so, following Anner Bylsma. ALIAVOX
