A live recording from London, the starting point of the tour that Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir undertook last year (2011) throughout Europe (Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Germany). This is their first intensive focus on motets since their 1982 recording for ERATO. The performance is full of passion. These motets, featuring intricate writing such as double choirs, are works to which Bach devoted considerable effort. Motets—a genre the Bach family had been composing continuously for generations—held great significance for Bach himself, and it is said that he often had his students study motets, including his own compositions, in great detail. For contemporary performers as well, these works can be considered among the pinnacles of vocal and choral music, requiring both the skill to express the subtle nuances that shift with every word and every note, and the stamina to sustain such performance. Of course, they are also captivating works that hold a unique place in the hearts of instrumentalists. The final piece included in this recording is one whose authorship by Bach is not definitively established; however, it was included based on the belief that no other work could serve as a more fitting conclusion to these six magnificent motets. Additionally, BWV 118 was not included in this recording because it lacks a self-contained instrumental part.
