The World of Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*, Told Through Vivaldi’s Masterpieces *Hotel Metamorphosis*, Performed at the 2025 Salzburg Festival A Mythological World Brought to Life by Cecilia Bartoli, Filip Jarski, and Others *Hotel Metamorphosis*, performed at the 2025 Salzburg Festival, is a pastiche that combines Vivaldi’s music with Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. Ovid’s *Metamorphoses* has continued to profoundly influence Western culture for over two thousand years as an inexhaustible wellspring of creativity. Director Barry Kosky selected several episodes from this mythical world and fused them with the music of Antonio Vivaldi to create a new stage production for the modern era. Set in a fantastical hotel room, Orpheus narrates the stories of the mythological characters. Under Kosky’s direction and with Gianluca Capuano conducting, the production brings together leading Baroque singers such as Cecilia Bartoli, Philip Jarsky, and Lea Desandre. Cecilia Bartoli, who plays Eurydice and Arachne, is one of the world’s foremost mezzo-sopranos, renowned for her exceptional technique and overwhelming expressiveness. Meanwhile, Philip Jarsky, who plays Pygmalion and Narcissus, is a world-renowned countertenor highly acclaimed for his crystal-clear voice and delicate expression. In this production, both artists leave a strong impression as central figures in the work. A pastiche is a form that flourished in the 18th century, in which existing musical works are combined to create a new stage production. For this work, Kosky and Olaf A. Schmidt meticulously examined approximately 500 pieces by Vivaldi, carefully selecting and rearranging arias, duets, and instrumental pieces. This work distills the essence of Vivaldi’s music, which portrays a wide range of human emotions—including anger, love, sorrow, and transformation. CMAJOR
