Veroux: Collection of Works for Oboe and Piano French oboist and composer Stanislas Veroux was born in Arlon and became renowned as a virtuoso on both the oboe and the violin. At the Paris Conservatory, he won second prize in Gustave Voigt’s class in 1833 and first prize the following year; records also indicate that, as a violinist, he was appointed second violinist in the Palais-Royal Orchestra in 1831. He subsequently succeeded Voigt as professor of oboe at the Paris Conservatory from 1853 to 1860, where he mentored the next generation of musicians. These concert solos are his signature works; he composed at least 80 of them, each known for its extreme technical difficulty, requiring the oboist to master extraordinary virtuosity. It is puzzling that, despite being such magnificent works, there are almost no recordings of them. The oboist is Enrico Calcarni, born in Ravenna in 1965. He studied under Diego Dini Chiacci at the Verona Conservatory and won first prize at the Saluzzo Competition. While serving as principal oboist in numerous orchestras, he has expanded his scope of activity since 1992 by actively participating not only as a soloist but also in chamber ensembles. Magani, who plays the piano, is also renowned as a composer and is well-versed in the structure of wind instruments; here, too, he delivers a compelling performance.
