This is a set of the most comprehensive recordings of symphonies and concertos conducted by Friend. The orchestra is the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, of which Friend was chief conductor from 2006 to 2017. All recordings were sound engineered by Bert van der Wolf, the label's renowned recording engineer, and the performance and sound quality are both consistent and convincing. Friend has played with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, and is skilled in playing ancient music. The dashing tempo and the boldness of the cutting style are therefore very pleasing. This individuality is matched exquisitely with the full sound unique to the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, which uses modern instruments, creating a rare performance that has a warm atmosphere but is also full of a strong desire to express. The orchestra's attitude of confronting Beethoven's score head-on, without any eccentricities, is also very pleasing, and the richness and weight of the music in such a substantial work as "Hero" can be fully appreciated.The beautiful wind cantabile that appears in various places is also a treat to hear. The piano concerto is a solo by Minnaar, who also made his name in recording the complete piano trio, and the cadenzas are all by Beethoven. The Violin Concerto is also performed solo by the label's signature artist, Ferstmann, and the cadenza is an unusual one with timpani, which Schneiderhan rewrote for violin from the cadenza written by Beethoven when he arranged it for piano concerto (Op.61a).
