Irina Chukovskaya, born in Uzbekistan in the former Soviet Union, is an internationally renowned pianist who won a prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1980, and since 1991 has also gained fame in the United States. He is currently back in Russia, where he continues to give enthusiastic concerts while also devoting himself to teaching at the Moscow Conservatory, the Gnesinov Russian Academy of Music, and other institutions. In Japan, he is a guest professor at the Nagoya Prefectural University of Arts and Musashino Academia Musicae, where he is training many young pianists. Piano Sonata No. 20 is one of the splendid lyrical masterpieces of the Romantic school and Schubert.
