A performance of a lifetime, in which Rattle poured his entire energy into the work that launched his career Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” produced from a live performance in the fall of 2010 as part of a series of consecutive concerts by Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic spanning the “Mahler Year” from 2010 to 2011. For the Berlin Philharmonic, this is a work with special significance, as they gave its world premiere in 1985 under Mahler’s baton; for Rattle, it was a live performance he attended at age 12 that inspired him to become a conductor. It is also the piece he organized and performed with a student orchestra while attending the Royal Academy at age 18—a performance that drew the music world’s attention and served as the springboard to his career as a professional conductor. His farewell concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra also featured “Resurrection,” making this a new recording of a work that could be called his life’s work, one he has returned to at every milestone of his career. “Mahler attempted to pack the entire ‘world’ into a single symphony, and within this ‘world,’ everything circulates—from the deaths of nameless heroes to memories of life where beauty and terror coexist, and finally to resurrection and salvation. Painted on a vast canvas featuring a vast array of musicians, for me, it is one of the most deeply moving works among all orchestral compositions…” Please look forward to Rattle’s monumental new recording, as he himself comments.
