In contrast to the expansive sense of tempo found in his later Sony recording (1989), this performance is characterized by a tight, highly concentrated sound that is over five minutes shorter. It features a coexistence of natural resonance and dramatic flexibility—a precursor to the master’s later years—and the technology of EMI’s final analog recording era at the time masterfully captures its “passion.” Within its solid, sculptural beauty, the drive and flexibility unique to this period breathe life into the performance. A precious return to EMI’s golden age—the pinnacle of analog recording—this release features a natural, deep sound quality.
