Muti's only recording of the work — a fervent, theatrical performance of startling immediacy — released on SACD for the first time anywhere. An outstanding analogue recording from the closing years of the EMI era. This 2018 reissue restores one of the finest-sounding discs in the former EMI catalogue, widely regarded as one of Muti's supreme achievements. Boldly drawing out the dramatic character of every number, it remains the most powerful Carmina Burana of the analogue era. Recorded in 1979, with ample range, superb definition of the individual voices and a full sense of the orchestra's impact, it returns here in modern guise. The singing, chorus included, is also exceptional. Muti has not returned to the work in the studio (his most recent live performance was at the Spring Festival in Tokyo in 2010), which adds further to the disc's value. This Carmina Burana was recorded in 1979, right at the end of the analogue era. Made at Abbey Road Studios, it yields separation of instruments and dynamic range that stand comparison with today's best recordings, while Muti's pressure from the very opening bars is formidable, producing a dynamic, vital reading. Despite its quality, the recording was out of the catalogue for long stretches of the CD era and its virtues have never been fully appreciated. The master tapes are in excellent condition: the SACD layer offers high-definition sound of vast spectacle, while the CD layer delivers a compact, forceful account of the performance. The booklet has been expanded for this special edition and carries a newly commissioned essay by Kozo Asari. The original German masters were digitised at 96kHz/24bit, and the SACD and CD layers were then mastered separately from scratch: the SACD layer aims at an extended treble, soft nuance, high resolution and a rich sound stage, the CD layer at tangible presence of tone. This 18th instalment of the Definition Series, marking the 20th anniversary of our Shinjuku store, comprises two titles in all.
