Dai Fujikura & Jan Bang

Description:

The Bow Maker" by Dai Fujikura and Jan Bang is an album consisting of eight tracks of multi-dimensional musical movement, starting with the opening track "Night Poles River. The Bow Maker" is an album of multi-dimensional musical movement, not in the usual sense of composition, but in the sense of actual movement, always active, enveloping the listener and enclosing him or her in a dreamy, bubbly acoustic space. Dai Fujikura played synthesizer for the entire album (except for "Implanted Memories," which uses orchestral samples). Jan Bang uses his own sampling, sound processing, and programming. An ever-changing cast will participate in this process. Ivin Allset's guitar inserts textural elements, broad warm glissandos, and short unidentified notes. Arve Henriksen offers fluid trumpet playing and breathy falsetto vocals. Nils Petter Molvell's trumpet shares musical DNA with Henriksen, but offers a different mood.Kati Laitinen's resonant cello in the title piece creates an exciting textural contrast to the shifting sound world around it. Tamami Higashino's sho creates a unique soundscape that undulates and rolls through sheer mountains and valleys. The mood and atmosphere of each piece is distinctly divided, sometimes wide and spacious, sometimes closed and focused, sometimes warm and hazy, sometimes cold and clear. Momentary elements - drums, prepared piano, orchestra, field recordings, or echoes of other manipulated instruments - dominate these spaces, within which the main actors, trumpets or voices, or both, flit about, weaving a kind of life form. It is as if the lights and silhouettes behind the shoji screens are changing in various ways. Despite being electronic music, the sounds in the soundscape are clearly distinct while their true source is often unclear. This is probably due to the organic spirit of the music combined with the versatility of the participating musicians. This seemingly free-form piece has a subtle structure over which the music flows like wind-blown silk, oscillating between obscuring this supporting structure, attaching to its contours, or exposing them with ease. The final song, "Satellite Sister," is perhaps the closest to a conventional song structure, with its implicit and repeated counterpoint. The album is arguably a perfect example of the punkt sound. This album is not music that tucks into the background unnoticed, nor is it a soundtrack to a New Age meditation, nor is it sound furniture. It is music that engages directly with the listener, actively penetrates the listener's consciousness, and holds the listener's attention. This album is the authentic Punkt sound, first released on Punkt Editions, under the Jazzland Recording umbrella, supervised by Jan Bang and Eric Honoré.
