EMILAND—a yellow-clad group known for their soulful and funky live performances that can best be described as “one-of-a-kind”—has released their third album, their first in about three years. Formed at the end of the Heisei era by members who are each active in their respective roots music scenes, this third album, "LIFE"—their first in about three years—pursues the 60s soul and funk sounds at the core of the four EMILAND members while also brimming with deeply human expression. The recording process featured simple miking and was done almost entirely in one take, including vocals and the guest horn section. The band went to great lengths to capture the authentic ’60s sound—not only in the arrangements and performances, but also in the mixing and mastering, done in collaboration with engineer Satoshi Fukuda, right down to the analog re-tape by GOKSOUND. However, vocalist Ultra Emi pours her heart out in Japanese, painting a raw, realistic picture of the world where even human emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness—as well as individuality and even clumsiness, feel endearing. Because the lyrics are deliberately sung in a way that’s easy to understand, the album carries a pop sensibility and a touch of the surreal that evokes a strange sense of familiarity among middle-aged listeners living in the present day. Yes, it’s a Japanese soul album with quite a distinctive edge to be placed on a SOUL shelf, but here lies the present state of SOUL MUSIC that EMILAND continues to explore. What exactly is SOUL? We want to express it not just on the surface or through music theory, but from a much deeper, core level. ...Well, I’ve been giving a rather serious and formal explanation up to this point, but just take a look at the song titles on this album. “Troublemaker,” “Empty-Handed,” “Pretty Forceful,” “Not Mad,” “Can’t-Stop Sweets,” “Escape Route,” “No Motivation”.... Yep, it’s an album full of “lovely, crazy people.” Please listen to it with a smile. If you listen to it with headphones, you’ll definitely get goosebumps by the end—in more ways than one.
