Villa-Lobos' most familiar instrument was the cello. It is no wonder, then, that his works for cello and orchestra are so interesting. The "Cello Concerto No. 1" was written at the beginning of his career as a composer. On the other hand, "Cello Concerto No. 2," which is full of Brazilian elements, is a "tailor-made" masterpiece written in his last years with Aldo Parisot, who premiered it. It is a work of song and technique that could only come from a composer who knew the cello inside and out! The melody of the second movement, in particular, is as beautiful and generous as the aria from "Bach in Brazilian Style No. 5".
