The first collection (8.573763) of Spohr's violin duets was well received. The second collection includes three pieces from Op. 39, published in 1816. Originally written to raise funds for a tour of Italy, Spohr himself stated that he wrote the works in an easy style so that anyone could play them, but the publisher Peters was reluctant to publish them, saying they were "too difficult. Although he barely managed to get them published, Peters complained to Spohr that the works were too challenging and too difficult (and unlikely to sell). Spohr continued, "It's not difficult.
