Description:
Alfred Bruneau was a 19th century French opera composer. A close friend of Emile Zola, who advocated "naturalism," Bruneau collaborated with Zola for 20 years and is known for introducing a realist style to French opera. His masterpiece "Assault on the Windmill" on this album is based on Zola's work, and "Mesidor" (meaning "August, the month of the French Revolution") was written by Zola himself. His music, with its thick harmonies and exotic sounds, also shows the influence of Wagner and the French musical currents that were not "impressionistic" at the beginning of the 20th century. Darrell Anne is enthusiastic about releasing unknown French music. He spins out music that is worth listening to even here in Bruneau, and conveys the joy of hearing new repertoire. Naxos Japan
