Description:
Originally Italian, Lully changed his name from Giovanni Battista to "Jean-Baptiste" in a French style when he became active in France, and also acquired nationality in 1661. As music master at the court of Louis XIV, he dominated French aristocratic society. A talented dancer, he composed many ballets for Louis XIV, who was also a dancer, and often appeared on the same stage with him, thus attracting audiences and maintaining a close relationship with the king and strengthening his own voice. Lully, who was favored by the king, revolutionized court music in the 17th century by forming his own orchestra and performing at balls held at the Château de Versailles. One of his most famous works, "Roland," is one of the "lyric tragedies" that Lully established, and it has been highly popular since its premiere and has had a strong influence on the composers around him. The influence of Muffat and Malle's suite, which can be heard on this album, can also be felt. Bartolt Kuijken captures the characteristics of each piece and gives them a gorgeous interpretation.
