The setting is the island of Lesbos, but the content is a love story between a boy and a girl. Quasi-Merkle has demonstrated his keen sensitivity in a series of Debussy recordings in which the characters dance on the supple bars. This time we are treated to an even more colorful and passionate collection of Ravel's ballet music for "Daphnis et Chloe," a love story by the late 2nd-early 3rd century Greek writer Longos, written at the request of Diaghilev's Russian ballet company. The exquisite orchestration is the work of Ravel, a wizard of sound. There have been masterful performances by various conductors and orchestras, and this disc is surely one of them.
