Of the more than ten symphonies written by Joachim Ruff, the most popular was Symphony No. 5, composed in 1872. Subtitled "Lenore," it is based on the ballad "Lenore," written by Gottfried August Bürger on the subject of the Thirty Years' War, in which the music depicts the tragedy of lovers torn apart by war. The work is full of musical highlights, such as the depiction of love scenes reminiscent of Wagner, the heroic march, and the long final movement that brings everything to a close. The overture "We God is a Sturdy Fortress" at the end of the album was written in 1865. It is dedicated to Hans von Bülow and is also related to the Thirty Years' War. A slow introduction leads to the famous Lutheran hymn played by woodwinds. The melody develops one after another, and at the end, the victory is sung in high spirits. Naxos Japan
