James Ehnes, one of the best violinists of our time, makes his first appearance on the PENTATONE label! The recording of John Williams' Violin Concerto No. 1 was made in the presence of the composer. The coupling is Bernstein's famous "Serenade"! This is amazing! James Ehnes, one of the best violinists of our time, makes his first appearance on the PENTATONE label! With the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, led by Stéphane Denève, he will perform two of the finest composers and musicians in American music history, Leonard Bernstein's "Serenade" and John Williams' Violin Concerto No. 1, a combination of the best of both worlds! Williams' Violin Concerto No. 1 was dedicated to his late wife, Barbara Luyck, in March 1974, with great sadness after Williams' first wife, the actress Barbara Luyck, died while filming a movie. The premiere took place on January 29, 1981, with Marc Peskanov (a great violinist who was born in Odessa and immigrated to the United States in 1973) playing solo, Leonard Slatkin conducting, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Ehnes was introduced to the work by Deneve.Since then, Williams has given us many opportunities to work on this concerto, and we have "shared" the music making process. This recording was also done in the presence of Williams, so everything was in perfect order. The coupling piece is "Serenade" for violin solo, strings, harp and percussion, composed by Bernstein in 1954 and premiered in Venice in the same year with Isaac Stern playing solo and the composer himself conducting! Inspired by Plato's "Feast," this is Bernstein's masterpiece in five movements (I. Phaedrus-Pausanias, II. Aristophanes, III. Elyximakos, IV. Agathon, V. Socrates-Alcibiades). The work was performed at the 1986 Tanglewood Music Festival, with Midori Goto playing solo, Bernstein conducting, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It is also known as the "Miracle of Tanglewood," in which Midori Goto immediately switched to the concertmaster's violin and played through the last movement, even though the E line broke twice.This led to the worldwide recognition of the "Serenade", which is now an essential repertoire for world-class violinists and is performed frequently.
