Shcherbatchev was a composer born in Warsaw in 1889 and died in Leningrad in 1952. He also taught at the Leningrad Conservatory and is known as Mravinsky’s composition teacher. No. 5 is sometimes subtitled “The Russian” and is a masterpiece that follows the classic path of Soviet symphonic music—reminiscent of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5—with themes of “rewarding good and punishing evil” and “love always triumphs in the end.” However, from the very beginning, the cymbals clang, the tom-toms rumble, the bell tolls (just kidding), and firemen come flying in (as if that would ever happen)—it’s just ridiculously flashy and noisy. The final movement features a thoroughly carefree musical theme—whether it’s because they’ve won the war or are convinced of the eternal legitimacy of socialism, who knows? “Captain Tobacco” is music for a musical show, featuring melodies brimming with Russian charm sung in a resonant voice—it’s quite enjoyable.
